How to Prepare for Your 3D/4D or HD Live Ultrasound: A Checklist

To prepare for a 3D/4D ultrasound, choose a session that fits how far along you are, book your appointment ahead of time, wear a comfortable two-piece outfit, and plan who you’d like to bring. For the clearest facial detail, many parents aim for roughly 27–32 weeks, which is exactly when we recommend our Keepsake HD Live Experience. Most of the rest is simply relaxing and enjoying the moment with your little one.

We’re A Future Look in Jackson, Ohio, and we love welcoming families from across Southern Ohio for these special visits. This checklist walks you through everything, from timing to what you’ll take home, so you can walk in feeling ready and walk out with keepsakes you’ll treasure.

What is the best week for a 3D or 4D ultrasound?

The best week depends on what you’re hoping to see. Early in pregnancy, babies are still small and haven’t filled out yet, so 3D images look very different from the chubby-cheeked faces you may have seen online. Late in pregnancy, babies have less room to move and often settle into positions that make their faces harder to see.

That’s why the sweet spot for detailed facial images is generally the late second to early third trimester. Here’s how our 3D/4D and HD Live sessions line up with your timeline:

Session Best weeks Length Price
Precious Moments Experience (2D/3D/4D) Any stage of pregnancy 15 min $145
Keepsake HD Live Experience 27–32 weeks 25 min $195
One Last Look (attempted 3D/4D facial images) 35+ weeks 15 min $95

You can see every option side by side on our ultrasound packages page.

When should you get a 4D ultrasound?

4D simply means 3D images in motion, so you can watch your baby yawn, stretch, or wiggle in real time. Our Precious Moments Experience includes 2D, 3D, and 4D imaging and can be booked at any stage of pregnancy, which makes it a lovely choice if you’d like a peek whenever the timing feels right for your family. If your heart is set on the most lifelike facial detail, the Keepsake HD Live Experience between 27 and 32 weeks is the one we recommend.

What if I’m already past 35 weeks?

You haven’t missed your chance. Our One Last Look session is designed for 35 weeks and beyond. We’ll attempt 3D/4D facial images, you’ll hear baby’s heartbeat, and you’ll get an estimated fetal weight. Just know that at this stage babies are snug, so facial views depend a lot on how your little one is positioned.

How long does a 3D ultrasound take?

The scan itself is short and sweet. Our Precious Moments Experience is 15 minutes, the Keepsake HD Live Experience is 25 minutes, and One Last Look is 15 minutes. It’s a good idea to arrive a few minutes early so you can get settled and aren’t feeling rushed when it’s time to start.

If you’d like to see your baby at several stages, The Ultimate Bundle ($399) combines Peace of Mind, Gender Determination, the Keepsake HD Live Experience, and One Last Look, with priority scheduling and a savings of $101 compared with booking separately. You can read the details on The Ultimate Bundle page.

Your pre-visit checklist

1. Book your appointment ahead of time

We’re by appointment only, so it’s best to reserve your spot early, especially if you’re aiming for a specific week. Our hours are:

  • Monday: 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Closed
  • Thursday and Friday: 4–8 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m.–8 p.m.

Evening and weekend times are popular with working parents and out-of-town grandparents, so plan accordingly. No doctor’s order is needed to book.

2. Pick a week with a little wiggle room

If you’re booking the Keepsake HD Live Experience, try to schedule toward the middle of the 27–32 week window. That way, if life gets busy or you need to move your appointment, you still have time to land in the ideal range.

3. Decide who’s coming

This is a family moment, and many parents love sharing it with a partner, their other children, or a grandparent-to-be. Because space and guest guidelines can vary, give us a call at (740) 352-5470 or check our FAQ page before you invite the whole crew.

4. Wear something comfortable and easy

A two-piece outfit, like a top with leggings or loose pants, makes it easy to expose just your belly without changing clothes. Comfortable is the goal, since you’ll be lying back for the session.

5. Bring your phone

All of your images are texted to you immediately after your session, so make sure your phone is charged and you’ve got the right number on file. It’s a fun way to share the news with family right from the parking lot.

6. Think about extras before you arrive

  • Gender check: The Keepsake HD Live Experience includes a gender check if requested. Let us know ahead of time if you want to find out, or if you’d rather keep it a surprise.
  • 8K rendering: Every Keepsake HD Live Experience includes a free 8K baby rendering.
  • Heartbeat keepsake: If you’d like a cuddly keepsake animal with baby’s heartbeat inside, ask about our Heartbeat Bear Session.

7. Find us easily

We’re located at 406 East Huron Street in Jackson, Ohio. For directions and parking, visit our contact and directions page.

What will I take home from my session?

Every family leaves with something to treasure, though what’s included depends on the session:

  • Precious Moments Experience: 2D/3D/4D session, baby’s heartbeat, estimated fetal weight, 8–12 printed images, images texted right after, and a complete video of your session.
  • Keepsake HD Live Experience: HD Live session, gender check if requested, baby’s heartbeat, estimated fetal weight, 8–12 printed images, images texted right after, a complete session video, and a free 8K baby rendering.
  • One Last Look: Attempted 3D/4D facial images, baby’s heartbeat, estimated fetal weight, images texted right after, and a complete session video.

What should I realistically expect?

We’ll be honest with you, because we want your visit to feel joyful, not stressful. Your baby is the real star of the show, and babies don’t always pose on cue. Hands near the face, a foot in the way, or a baby facing your spine can all affect how many facial images we can capture.

Our team brings real experience to every session. Owner Kari Coyan (“Aunt Kari”) is a diagnostic sonographer with over 12 years of ultrasound experience, and sonographer Bailey Rose has been scanning since 2019. You can learn more about Kari and the studio’s story on our About page. Even with experienced hands, though, baby’s position is the biggest factor in what we can see, so a little patience and a lot of grace go a long way.

Do elective ultrasounds replace my regular prenatal scans?

No. Our sessions are elective keepsake ultrasounds, and they are not diagnostic. They complement, but never replace, the care and scans ordered by your healthcare provider. Please keep all of your regular prenatal appointments, and bring any health questions, including whether an elective session is right for you, to your provider.
